"Surfaces" @ Sandler Hudson Gallery

Okay I have been taking a break from the studio and blog since my show went up. It's been an intense past year and having some moments to relax has been nice. Here are a few shots of the show. I have more work posted on my website. It feels good to have the work up on some clean white walls. The shows runs through Feb 25th at Sandler Hudson Gallery. Surfaces Statement

This recent workbody of work is an exploration of structures and layering. Pushing thepaintings further and finding new shapes and surfaces has been an excitingavenue that I plan to continue with. I have loosely named the smaller groupings“The Fat Series”. There is a bold and raw quality behind these pieces. I workintuitively to create all my paintings. They are a reflection of the energy andstate of mind when created. I want the tactile seduction of paint that inspiresme to come through to the viewer.

I spent last weekend cleaning my studio and I am still not done. These small pieces created quite a mess and they required the most paint I have ever used. I am looking forward in starting some new work to continue the fat.

Best wishes for a creative fun year! This is one of last pieces I completed in 2011. It is a close up to show the layering going on. I am wrapping up some pieces for my show coming up and will be doing all those cleaning up details we all love to do;) My next post will most likely be after my opening. I am working away to finish up pieces for my upcoming show. This is a new one. The pieces are coming together, just feel that pressure to add a few more. I went to see the Cecil Touchon show at Emily Amy Gallery this week. The show is titled "New Works & Old Favorites". It is a mix of collages on paper, panel, and canvas. From the gallery website: Touchon views collage as directly reflective of his personal experience. He states, “This fleeting quality of papers and messages and the images they contain seems a fitting material for the contemplation of our temporal condition- of our brief sojourn in this world".
The show runs until December 3rd. The gallery has a beautiful space- check it out!

These days I spend my time at my day job and the rest in my studio. I won't even pretend that I use the kitchen much...it's basically a room I pass through to get to where I need to go. My husband Zak is the one who creates in that room. I am fortunate he loves to cook and likes to make something different to surprise me. This morning he made jalapeno-chorizo grits with egg and cilantro. A twist on a southern staple. Yummy!

Gwyneth Leech is creating a stir at the Flatiron Prow Art Space. The show "Hypergraphia" runs 24 hrs a day until Dec 31st. It is located at the Flatiron at 23rd St where Broadway and 5th Ave cross. Terri Dilling uses painting and printmaking techniques that achieve such rich beautiful surfaces and hues. From Terri's website she explains that her work is a mix of mico and makro viewpoints. She is inspired by scientific investigations of the patterns and structures of nature. Such as the formulation of plants and flowers. Terri has a show "Assembly" up now at Portal Gallery that runs through Oct. 30th. It is a result of a seven month position as a visiting artist at the NSF/NASA Center for Chemical Evolution at Georgia Tech. Click here to see some installation shots of the show. Altoon Sultan "Reds" 7"x5" egg tempera on calfskin parchment

Altoon Sultan creates amazing bold crisp egg tempera paintings and objects -hooked rugs or "ruglets" that tie into each other. There are so many pieces that I love that is hard to keep this concise. Altoon takes pictures in rural VT of farm machinery for reference for some of her works. I love the intensity of these machinery paintings in contrast to the softness of the woolen rugs.
I think they bounce off each in a playful way. Atloon explains the many connections/references to art history that certain pieces pertain to. She writes a very warm and thoughtful blog that explains the process of her works.

Altoon explains on her blog:
To make these small textile pieces, I first do pencil and color studies. Then I hand dye woolen cloth, which is later cut into strips and hooked through a linen backing, making loops of wool which create the design.

I love the two mediums she works in for many reasons. They are not common mediums everyone takes on. There is some labor of love that must take place to create these. Both mediums have a powerful effect that is refreshing.

Altoon's work is included in many public collections including: Tate Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Yale University Art Gallery , Portland Museum of Art, and many more.

Today's Sunday Selection is all sculpture for the first time. I stumbled upon Anna's work and found it quite beautiful. I am drawn to the feeling and personality each one conveys. The use of materials to execute these forms is quite stunning. She is a Sydney based artist that works in paper and copper pipe. Atlanta artist Don Cooper creates mesmerizing works. He has won numerous awards including the MOCA GA Working Artist Grant and Artadia Award. The work pulls you in and you want to linger for a long time. I am amazed at the patience and thoughtfulness it must take to create these beauties. The work of Sand T Kalloch is so intriguing to me. They have a meditative and serene effect. Her photos are really fantastic but I am sure they can't do justice of the work up close. Off To NYC

I am leaving for NYC tomorrow for a work trip. I am hoping I will have a bit of time to see some art and have something good to report on. It's just inspiring being there so I know I will at least come back with some good energy to bring back to the studio. I did get some good news yesterday that I will be having a two person show in January at Sandler Hudson Gallery. I will be showing the new "Fat Series" that I have been working on. I am very happy that I will be able to focus on this show and really push this series.

Today is a tribute to my sweet loyal Indy. We had to say goodbye yesterday. He was such a special dog-there just won't be another Indy. I don't have children so he is as close as it gets for me.
Indy had been with me for 15.5 yrs. The time from my college years to yesterday. He was my companion for all of my early adulthood. I really can't imagine my life without him.
He lived in Brooklyn with me in a wild loft I rented with 6 other artists. He traveled with me back and forth to Ohio and then settling in Georgia.

He has been my best friend and companion through everything. If you know me-you know how dear to my heart he is. He loved sitting with me in my studio while I painted. He didn't ever want me to be alone. It's amazing how human he was and knew me so well. I know how lucky I am that I had him by my side for so long.

I have been not posting as much due to some much needed family time. I am trying to get back on track with the blogging and studio time. I will be headed to NYC next week for a week for work and hope to get in some gallery gazing as well. I hope to post about that trip. They are on a smaller scale which I like, but I would love to see these really large taking over a wall. They have a fun playful quality that I am drawn to. Memory as Medicine is the most comprehensive exhibition of art by Atlanta-based artist Radcliffe Bailey to date. It includes many new works and others never before presented publicly. The exhibition highlights underlining themes in Bailey's work represented by his signature layering of imagery, culturally resonant materials, and text.

Exhibit runs June 26 - September 11, 2011

Radcliffe Bailey explores American history and memory to encourage healing and transcendence through art. The exhibition features 37 works ranging from heroic to intimate scale, including installations, paintings, sculptures, mixed media, photos on metal, and works on paper.

Rana Rochat works in encaustics on a very large scale that is impressive. I have seen her works at Fay Gold Gallery a few years ago here in Atlanta and David Lusk Gallery in Memphis. I love the loops, drips, and shapes that give the work a playful feel. Her use of color and depth is beautiful.

Continuing to push the edges

This is a quick shot from my studio of the second painting where I am creating new edges past the wood structure. It's amazing how heavy this piece is. It's was 8"x8" and now has a few inches added on each side. I am having fun exploring this direction.

I do have days I feel this way but today I am talking about the new series I am working on. Lots of thick fat layering but trying to keep some fluid feel to them. I am really enjoying changing the shape of the panel with the added edge build up. Looking forward on adding to this series.

I have admired Rose Olson's work for a few years. I saw her work in Atlanta at Marcia Wood Gallery in 2007 "Luxe, Calme et Volupte" which was curated by Joanne Mattera . I love the subtle use of color in conjunction with the wood panel coming through. The contract of the works that punch with vivid color is stunning. There is a serene soft glow that is special. {Poem88} has the distinct pleasure of presenting Marwencol: photographs from Mark Hogancamp and David Naugle. In 2000, Mark Hogancamp, a resident of a tiny, upstate New York hamlet, was brutally beaten as the result of a bar room brawl. The victim of a hate crime (Hogancamp is a cross-dresser), he suffered significant brain damage and after completing what government-funded rehabilitation was available, Hogancamp embarked on his own self-prescribed therapy to restore his imagination. David Naugle, a local photographer, after befriending Hogancamp, was welcomed into the unbelievable story that is Marwencol.

Hutchins was an acclaimed participant in the 2010 Whitney Biennial. John Heward is one of Canada’s most respected artists, and his formal investigations into the possibilities of painting and sculpture are well known in that country. May 6 – June 18, 2011 Growing up in Rensselear County in upstate New York would eventually have a profound influence on Michael Abrams’ artistic career, although he was not aware of it then. The views out his childhood bedroom window of the Hudson River Valley became deeply engrained in his subconscious and have since become the predominant subject of his work. The landscapes are loosely based on these Hudson River Valley vistas he remembers but are also partially fabricated in his imagination. The combination makes for atmospheric, luminescent and ethereal paintings created from layering glazes from semi-transparent to opaque. The result is a beautifully rendered edenic nature of Abrams’ own personal invention.

Danille Roney: On the Edge of Self. In collaboration with Jeff Conefry and contributions from Penny Aviles. Roney’s newest multimedia project deftly sets the stage of a poignant moment in time, a choice, “to stay or to leave”. Circumstances are deconstructed through a series of parallel, bifurcating movements in which randomization software plays a key role, allowing a third and final author to participate, beyond the artist’s creation. Roney explores the psychological space “ in between”, where hybrid identity is crystallized and personal and social identities are transformed by multicultural and virtual influences in a real-time world.

I find and so many of us do-beautiful colors, lines, and textures in everyday objects. I am starting a new collection of abstract color squares found outside the studio. These will be part of a new project to inspire future paintings. I begin with pink, strangely enough found at my family's farm in the implement shed, not garden.

Sunday Morning Sweet Goodness

My Sunday Selection is a little behind because I was lucky enough to be enjoying this fabulous breakfast my husband made for us. I have to write about it because it was *amazing*. It is homemade sourdough bread-stuffed french toast. It consists of greek yougurt infused with blue berries and vanilla. Not to mention the maple syrup drizzled on top. I think he is really on to something here:)

I am working on a lot of new pieces and my studio is chaos. I will never be a "clean" artist. It's just not in me. Here are a few views and new pieces in the works. I am focusing on med-large works these days. I have no deadlines right now which gives me more freedom and ease to create. I am working in a fury through some pieces and taking my time with others. I am feeling like the work is headed to a really interesting place. It's moving more emotional and energized. I am having fun exploring new directions.

It's funny how some paintings take months or years to complete and then some come so quickly. Here are a few new works. They are pieces I started over a year ago with many layers and never finished. I put them away and recently finished them in a fury. Sometimes it takes a new energy and break to release them.

Laura Fayer's use of color and line is really lovely. Laura's cohesive body work of work mixes painting and layering. Some of the materials used are rice paper and over-sized rubber stamps. I love the mark marking she creates with her use of these materials. They have a organic ease to them. Perfect for a dreamy Sunday.

Structures & Paint

I have been busy in the studio working on some works on paper. I am thinking about taking some pieces and mounting them on panels. I love the textures I can achieve and the feeling of painting on paper, I always have. I have rolls of large works I did years ago that I found cleaning the studio. I have always had a "thing" for paper. It's just a structure I always go back to. I have also returned recently to working on canvas. I have been working on panels for the past few years almost exclusively. Going back to canvas is interesting. It has a give that the panels do not. I am enjoying it. I will have to see where all the different structures lead me this year. Below are all new works on three different structures....

This is a beautiful show of Don Cooper's work at Sandler Hudson Galley.

They are really mesmerizing.The watercolors are on 37" x 54" hand made Indian paper painted with pigment made from stones such as jade, turquoise and lapis lazuli. The paintings reflect concepts such as "the theory of everything" and visually bare a resemblance to the recent mathematical structure E8. If you haven't seen the show...go! I had the pleasure to meet and listen to three great artists this past Sunday afternoon at Marcia Wood Gallery. Artists Timothy McDowell, Kate Javens, and Joanne Mattera spoke and did a Q &A about their experiences. They participated in a 5 day intaglio printmaking journey at Connecticut College where Timothy McDowell teaches this medium. It was a loose, fun talk about the work they created in just 5 days. Each artist produced an edition of 30 of their imagery. Six artists participated but three could not make it to the discussion (Kim Anno Katherine Taylor, and Don Pollack).

The idea of bringing these artists together to form a show using a new method of art making-( none where quite familiar with excluding Timothy) was the brain child of Marcia Wood. Marcia and Tim organized to bring the artists together to embark on this enormous project. Tim joked that he squeezed a semester of printmaking into 5 days. What was produced in such a small amount of time is truly impressive.

For the artists this was a new vocabulary, new mark making system, and communication. It was a heavily collaborative effort between the artists. Marcia also gave a helping hand during the printmaking process. Each artist had a role in helping the other with their editions. It sounded like a special time of camaraderie between all involved and a chance to collaborate with each other. It is a unique experience in that most of these artist's are established and to this have a time to bounce off ideas was enlightening. Learning new methods was part of the fun and the fear-to be able to produce a body of work that all were happy with in such a short time. All the artists had to approach this differently than painting, which is the normal medium of all. It was a leap they all they all had to encounter. Tim explained how the entire medium is different and you have to think like a print maker-not a painter. He urged them to accept what the ink, plates, and paper would offer. It was a whole new language.

What was is amazing is how well the prints tie into all of their own current work. Joanne Mattera's piece "Soie" relates to her Silk Series of encaustic paintings. Joanne explained how she changed direction of the plates to build the textures and lines of her piece. She experimented with different compounds to give it the look of beeswax. This piece really radiates in the space. (Side note: If you don't read JoanneMatteraArtBlog -you should. It is filled with loads of important information for the artist, collector, and gallerist) Joanne has also written about Pull and has some great photos on her blog to check out.

All of their work is very different from one another yet there is a common thread and beauty of how they relate to one another.

Timothy's use of color and layering is just beautiful. He has a amazing show entitled "Kingdom Come" in the front gallery that this work ties directly with. They are all lush and have such a rich feel.

Kate's piece has so much detail and light. It's a powerful, beautiful piece.
