Gone West

I took a trip out west to LA and a little vacation in San Diego with a girlfriend to check out galleries and see what's happening. I was happy to be there when a lot of openings were going on. It was nice to check it all out and get a feeling of the scene there. LA has so much going on that I could have stayed much longer to investigate. I have felt my color sense would be a great fit there. I am hoping that I have made some good contacts and see where it may go. I love the fact that the weather is so amazing, it can only help people get out and go gallery gazing. I was very impressed with the turn out for so many shows. I was also happy to have such a good friendly experience. The west coast is laid back and happier I guess. Below are a few shots I took at some galleries before the openings started. The first one is at William Turner Gallery in Santa Monica at Bergamot Station. It is work by Eric Johnson. Bergamot houses a complex of galleries. This was a great area...so many galleries at one place and easy to get to and from. There were many galleries in here I enjoyed.

Eric Johnson to see more. Eric creates composite works of pigment, wood and resin. These abstract works merge the passion for depth and structure with an obsession for color and surface. Being a part of the California hot rod culture in the past, he has incorporated industrial products and automotive knowledge into his art making. (this was part of his statement on William Turner's site) Here are a few shots of the show. I will be posting more to come in the next few days of more amazing work.

Working Away

I am working away on a lot of new paintings....will update with better images when more complete. I am trying to get away from working on the floor! It's a bad habit I am trying to break!

Nature Series Collage

This is a series I am playing around with. I love the abstraction found in nature and the amazing subtle colors vs the crisp punches of color.

Inspiration

I took a trip to WV to visit my brother and really got a lot of inspiration from the amazing natural beauty there. I took a ton of photos and have managed to create a series of some really interesting images that correlate to my new work. I love photography and I am so inspired right now. I will post some of the abstract nature series soon.

Fresh Work

I love having a clean studio. I spent yesterday cleaning, organizing, and getting things in order. I am really excited about a new series of work I am doing which is a slight departure for me. I feel like I needed to let loose a bit and let go of some of my own boundaries. I have experimented with some new materials and mark making. It will be interesting to see where this all goes. I stopped by to see the show at Sandler Hudson Gallery of Greely Myatt, an artist and professor based in Memphis. Check out his narrative installations.
This piece is is made from reclaimed wood, fluorescent lights, metal and steel.

This sculpture of Myatt's is made of burned out light bulbs, wire, and electricity

Artist Talk with Susan Loftin

Susan Loftin has created "Pink Seat" on the urban courtyard of the roof top balcony of Sandler Hudson Gallery. This is made of found wood and Susan wanted us to experience her pink seat as she is in this picture.
